Map of Phase 1 of the proposed flood prevention measures.

With the historic flooding of the past two years, the Village of Teslin is looking into permanent flood protection measures for vulnerable areas. We have explored various methods of protection and have discovered that a berm would be the most feasible option with the least impact to residents. A berm is a man-made barrier of earth, gravel, rock, or other materials constructed along a road or other area to protect against flooding.

The first phase of the design plan is to create a berm on the back half of the Village and Yukon Government properties along Jackson Avenue (marked in blue on the map below). The front sections of the properties will be left with trees to create a visual barrier. After further permitting, phase two will be adding a berm behind the property lines of the remaining properties on Jackson Avenue. The Village believes that this project is of great importance as the lift station along Jackson Avenue services residents on the south side of the highway (village side), from the TTC Administration Building to the bridge. If the lift station were to be damaged or rendered out of service during a flood, all customers in that area would be unable to use the sewer system.

The Village will be adding flagging tape at the proposed line and height of the berm to give residents a visual. We have also created a survey to get feedback from the community about the proposed flood measures. For a printable copy of the flood measures survey, click here.

The Village of Teslin is currently in the process of finalizing the design for a new Marina. Our goal is for the Marina area to be more user friendly, durable, and better suit our growing community. The new design includes a larger boat dock to accommodate more boats, a breakwater to protect the dock area from waves, and a longer launchpad to allow access to the water during high and low water seasons. With the changing bridge location, we also have the option to create a recreation space at the Marina geared toward swimming, such as adding a floating dock (possible location represented by blue rectangle in picture below). Once the new bridge is completed, phase two of the development plans include adding an additional parking area. We are asking Teslin residents to fill a survey to get feedback and an idea of what residents would like to see in the design. For a printable copy of the survey, click here.
